PSHE & RSE

The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they understand more about how to play a positive and successful role within our society, both as a child and as an adult within the future.

Our aim is to provide pupils with a knowledge of their world, locally, nationally and globally and give children the confidence and skills to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues which are part of growing up. It is our intention to provide the children with opportunities for them to learn about respect, rights and responsibilities, learn to appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society and celebrate differences. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We promote pupils’ self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and help them to form and maintain worthwhile and satisfying relationships, based on respect for themselves and for others at home, school, work and in the community. We work in partnership with parents and carers, and with the wider community, to support children in all aspects of their wellbeing.

Our curriculum is designed to directly support the pastoral education as well as academic outcomes. The school primarily uses resources taken from Pol-Ed. Our PSHE and Citizenship programme includes teaching and learning within the following strands and themes:

Relationships

Keeping safe

Understanding the law

Wellbeing

One timetabled PSHE lesson per week is taught throughout the school. In Reception it is an integral part of topic work covered during the year. There are many opportunities where children are involved in PSHE outside of the discreet lesson including cross curricular teaching in science, RE, Geography, History and weekly assemblies.

We use class 'floor books' where lesson content is shared and pupil voice captured.  This enables staff and children to revisit taught areas of the PSHE curriculum and pupil thoughts and opinions.
