Intent
Perseverance – Opportunities for our children to think hard, to develop resilience and to keep going, even when they face difficulties. By learning from past times, victories and failures they learn about moments that have shaped us.
Respect – Help our children to develop cultural understanding based upon theirs, and others’ historical heritage, and to respect these. We give them the chronological understanding, vocabulary and appreciation of how and why things have changed over time so they are able to do this.
Independence – Consider how people lived in the past, so our children are better able to independently make clearer life choices today.
Dedication – Encourage our children to commit time and energy into what they believe is important to themselves, their local and wider community and to be the best versions of themselves.
Enthusiasm – In History we provide experiences that foster enthusiasm for a lifelong love of learning.
Implementation
At Kinderley Community Primary School we follow the National Curriculum through the CUSP curriculum. This curriculum is underpinned by Big Ideas that are built by linking small ideas together. The Big Ideas include: environmental responsibility, understanding others, community, citizenship and the wider world, migration, overcoming adversity, technology and the advancement of humanity and British heritage. This builds from EYFS to Year 6, with links made with learning in previous years and is organised in a two year rolling programme. History is taught termly, either as a half term unit or over a term.
A wide range of learning styles and experiences are provided, helping the children to read, write and think like a historian.
Additional opportunities
At Kinderley we use visits and visitors to enhance our children’s educational experiences. We make links with local, national and international events where we can provide a different learning experience for our children.
