Curriculum Rationale
At Kinderley Primary we aim for all children to be successful, resilient, curious and independent learners.
We see education as a tool to broaden horizons and develop a lifelong thirst for learning.
Intent
The curriculum is all the planned activities that we organise in order to promote learning, personal growth and development. It includes the formal requirements of the national Curriculum, but also the range of extra-curricular activities that the school organises to enrich the experiences of the children. It also includes what the children learn from the way they are treated and expected to behave. We aim to teach children how to grow into positive, responsible people, who can work and co-operate with others while developing their knowledge and skills, so that they achieve their true potential. Our curriculum is linked to our PRIDE values: Perseverance, Respect, Independence, Dedication and Enthusiasm
For most of the foundation subjects we use CUSP (Curriculum of Unity Schools Partnership) to guide teaching and learning in a number of subjects. It's a curriculum which recognises prior learning and develops an extensive vocabulary knowledge. It is aspirational, designed to inspire children through engaging texts and connects learning across subjects. The curriculum facilitates the broadening of horizons and prepares children for the next phase of their educational journey. In addition, we are preparing our children for an ever-changing society and our curriculum is founded on supporting our children to develop their self-confidence as successful learners by promoting positive attitudes to learning.
Implementation
The CUSP curriculum is rooted in proven educational research based on how children learn best, to enable children to know more, understand more and to recall more. We ensure that pupils experience a broad and balanced curriculum that reflects our commitment to inclusivity, high expectations and personalised learning. We consider the most important knowledge or concepts pupils need to know and focus on these. We follow the same thinking in the core subjects but use a variety of schemes/resources to respond to the needs of the children. For example, in English we use CUSP reading and spelling, Read Write Inc for phonics and HFL for writing.
Community involvement is an area we are developing as we recognise the importance of inviting families and visitors to observe learning and sharing experiences such as assemblies, festivals, open days and the celebration of learning.
Not all subjects are taught every term as we follow a two-year cycle due to our mixed age classes, and our long-term plans are available to view in the subject pages on our website. In maths and English, we stick very closely to the National Curriculum and year group expectations, but in some cases, we personalise the curriculum to reflect individual learning journeys.
Impact
Children will develop a life-long love of learning. They will make progress in core and foundation subjects. Children will benefit from a structured, cumulative approach to teaching and learning. Our curriculum will develop the 'whole child', including language and communication skills and they will develop a sense of belonging within the school and wider community.
We develop the potential of each child, providing engaging and exciting learning opportunities that have meaning and purpose and where children take increasing responsibility for their learning.
